~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Healthy Valentine's Day! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week's Beet is dedicated to Mary Kent's dad, Dr. Thomas E. Hearon, the best cardiologist ever!
This week, The Weekly Beet reports with lots of love on the benefits of eating heart healthy! Mary Kent wears her heart, revealing why we all could use a little love in our diet on Valentine's Day!
Throughout history, scientists, researchers, writers, and artists have studied the physiological, emotional, spiritual, and moral aspects of the mysterious organ we know as the human heart. From loving unconditionally to beating continuously, our heart plays one of the most crucial roles in the body, yet almost always goes unrecognized. Truly a muscle, the heart is shaped like a pear (not a heart), beats about 100,000 times per day, and makes the sound lub-Dub, lub-Dub when its valves open and close. Currently, there are 70 million Americans and 2.6 million Brits walking around with broken hearts who could definitely use a heart healthy Valentine today! Since Valentine's Day has long been a day to celebrate love between one another, what better way to show someone you care than to send a healthy Valentine? You can help by forwarding this week's Beet to someone you love who has had a heart attack or a stroke, may be suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity, or maybe just to someone who simply loves his health enough to take our list to heart. With cardiovascular disease the number one killer in the United States among men and women, it seems that we should be honoring not just Saint Valentine, but also the human heart! Each year, more than 500,000 female broken hearts result in death, proving yet another sad statistic that doesn't add much heart to our country's health. Except in cases of heredity, the good news is that heart disease can be prevented with a few lifestyle changes!
Here's our Valentine check list to achieving a long-lasting, healthy heart:
- As the Institute of Integrative Nutrition says, take a daily Vitamin L - meaning Love. Be loving! Think loving! Act lovingly! Cook with love!
- Exercise your heart out!
 - Stop Smoking! Need we say more?
- Add Flax Seed Oil to your diet.
- If you're giving chocolate to your Valentine, make it
dark!
- Increase the amount of fiber in your diet!
- Replace all white flour with whole-grained flours.
