~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can You HEAR The Beet? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning
and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder."
- Dr. Mitchell Gaynor
Last week, The Weekly Beet brought music to your ears, showing you just how powerful it can actually be. This week, Mary Kent says it's time to listen to the amazing health benefits of Sound Therapy.
It is believed that everything in the universe is in a constant state of vibration, including our body, our mind, and our spirit. Sound Therapy is the therapeutic use of sound waves to help heal the body of imbalances, by lifting the vibrational frequency of the body. We all know what vibration 'sounds' like if we listen to instruments or voices! But, have you ever noticed the difference between a voice that is happy and one that is depressed? When unwell, the body's vibrational energy changes to a lower frequency. A Sound Therapist may use different tools that range from bowls, forks, gongs, voices, and obviously music to realign the natural flow of the body's energy, thus healing imbalances and disease.
Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, clinical professor at Weill-Cornell Medical College, founder of Gaynor Integrative Oncology, and author of The Healing Power of Sound, uses Tibetan Singing Bowls in his oncology practice. Traditionally used as offering bowls in Tibet, Singing Bowls are not just musical instruments, they are powerful healing tools used during meditation. Once again, the West goes East as Dr. Gaynor incorporates the bowls to help his cancer patients fight fear, restore inner harmony, and speed recovery. He states, "One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes." Click here to listen to Tibetan Singing Bowls. Sounds pretty unBEETable to us!
Another favorite form of Sound Therapy is the use of Tuning Forks or Vibrational Sound Therapy. When we heard forks weren't just about eating, we went straight to Beryl Paxton, a gifted therapist in South Carolina, to find out how they are used to heal. She believes, like musical instruments, our bodies are in constant need of fine-tuning. Just as a tuning fork tunes an instrument, the tuning forks can tune the body. After getting a 'tune-up', Mary Kent can testify incredible benefits of stress relief, mental clarity, and increased energy.
Last but not least, don't forget the importance of playing a musical instrument! Whether it's the drums or the guitar, playing a musical instrument can provide an instant form of relaxation and concentration. Drumming, one of the most ancient musical traditions, has incredible health benefits among which are increased energy, focused attention, and heightened concentration.
Always listen to the Beet! Stay 'tuned' for next week.
Love,
Mary Kent
