2005
Happpppy New Year!!!!
This week, The Weekly Beet reports from the first days of 2005. What better way to bring in the New Year than with a few healthy foods to add to your diet! Here are a few of our favorites that we recommend eating to get 2005 off to a healthy start:
Greens.
Boil, saute, or steam. Greens are super important to add to the diet. They provide us with antioxidants, essential vitamins and nutrients. We say buy them fresh from the grocery or health food store. Nutritionally, greens are very high in calcium, 120-190 mg per cup. They're also high in magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and a power house for Vitamin A, C, E and K. They are also crammed high with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micro-nutrients and phyto-chemicals. Kale is one of our favorites!
Grains. Quinoa is one of our favorites. This grain dates back to about 3000 B.C. to the Incas who lived in the Andes mountains of South America. What we love about this grain is its high levels of protein! It contains all ten amino acids. Cook quinoa just as you would rice. It's super easy!
Beans. We love aduki beans. These tiny beans originated in China, and are also very popular in Japan. Their nutritional value is off the charts! They are high in protein, low in fat, and extremely high in fiber. We have reported on aduki beans in the past as a food for weight loss. They are a definite must to include in the diet. Almonds.
Almonds are simply an amazing nut. An almond nut is actually the seed of the almond fruit. Almonds contain so many different essential minerals such as magnesium, manganese, copper, potassium, and phosphorus. They help lower cholesterol, promote a healthy cardiovascular system, and some studies show may even help with weight loss. You can read more about the health benefits of almonds here. We have told you about our favorite almond butter. Click here if you forgot about it.
White Tea.
White Tea has recently become popular as an alternative to Green Tea. Some studies prove that White Tea has more antioxidant levels than any other tea due to the minimal processing of the tea leaves. Look for white tea at your local health food store.
Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week as we discuss our New Year's Resolutions!
Love,
Mary Kent
