Don't miss What's UnBEETable below!

This week, The Weekly Beet reports on the top 5 foods for 2009. Mary Kent makes a selection of the most nourishing, healthy foods, explaining why you just can't start the New Year without them!
Here are the foods that made this year's cut:
Black Beans. Everyone knows these little, black, protein-filled beans are infamous for stuffing burritos, but what you might not know is they're packed full of a trace mineral called molybdenum. I only recently found out about this trace mineral in my quest to finalize mercury healing. Molybdenum is an essential mineral that helps detox the body of sulfites and toxins like mercury. Eating one cup of black beans provides 172.0% of the daily value of this mineral. Black beans are also loaded with fiber, antioxidants, folate, and magnesium. Eat these little black jewels if you need a mineral or a protein fix! Add some guacamole or salsa on top!
Coconuts. We're absolutely crazy over coconuts! Whether it's an oil, a spread, or a juice, we'll take coconuts in whatever form they come in! Unfortunately, the coconut has undergone large scrutiny as it contains 92% saturated fat. But, as science is now proving, not all saturated fat is considered unhealthy. The meat of the coconut contains a healthier saturated fat (yes, there is such a thing), as it contains no trans fat, which are the killer fats. Coconut oil does not affect blood cholesterol levels and actually helps people lose weight, not gain. Cherie Calbom even wrote a book called The Coconut Diet, where she explains the essentials of incorporating coconut oil into the diet. You can also sprinkle some dried coconut flakes over your cereal or even over oatmeal! We learned that trick from trainer Tim Pittorina of Bodyism in London. Thanks Tim!
Sesame Seeds. Loaded with copper, manganese, and calcium, these oval-shaped seeds will provide your body with alot more energy than you might think! Sprinkle sesame seeds over greens or over a salad for a serious calcium kick. You can also buy something called Gomasio, a seasoning used by dieters of macrobiotics. If you can't bear to sprinkle your seeds, try them in a bar format! We're major fans of the Bumble Bar and the Oskri bar. They're both awesome!
Lemons. Whether you're squeezing a lemon in water or preparing lemon juice for the Master Cleanse, lemons should be added into everyone's diet in 2009! Lemons, known for their high alkalinity, are a confusing fruit, as most people consider them to be acid-forming in the body! The lemon is truly a miracle food, as it goes straight to the liver, where it performs it's wonderous action of detoxing! Lemons also contain cancer fighting compounds called flavonoids and are loaded with Vitamin C, which neutralizes free radicals in the body. Need a healthy salad dressing? Combine lemon juice, olive oil, crushed garlic, sea salt, and pepper to make a super tasty dressing. About to get a cold? Squeeze lemons in hot water and ad a teaspoon of manuka honey! Works like a charm every time!
Sweet Potatoes.
These golden, orangey carbs have long been known as one of the healthiest foods around! Packed with beta-carotene, the sweet potato is so sweet that you'll definitely pass on dessert at the end of the meal. And, the list of vitamins these sweets contain goes on and on, but it's the Vitamins A, C, and B-6 that definitely top the chart! Our favorite way to prepare sweet potatoes is to slice them, place them on a cookie sheet, and drizzle olive oil and sea salt on top. Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes. Super tasty!
Hope you're having a Happy 2009! Sorry we're a bit late, but better late than never! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

Here's What's UnBEETable:
My Health Tip: "Let's get this straight. You gotta eat breakfast! It's just not healthy to skip the most important meal of the day!"
My Favorite Quote: "When looking back at your life, you will see that the moments which seemed to be great failures followed by wreckage were the incidents that shaped the life you have now. You'll see that this is really true. Nothing can happen to you that is not positive. Even though it looks and feels at the moment like a negative crisis, it is not. The crisis throws you back, and when you are required to exhibit strength, it comes!"
- Joseph Campbell
