Don't miss What's UnBEETable below!

This week, The Weekly Beet gets happy over Hemp Hearts! Mary Kent reports on what this little, power-packed seed can actually do for your body!
Hemp. It's an oil, a drug, a fiber, a fuel, a paper product, a cosmetic ingredient, and now even a healthy superfood! Packed with high levels of proteins, vitamins, and enzymes, Hemp Seeds certainly won't make you high, but they'll definitely make your body chronically healthy! Coming from a variety of the Cannabis plant that contains the lowest amount of THC, the psychoactive ingredient contained in Marijuana, Hemp Seeds are fast becoming one of the most healing foods of the millennium. However, there's really nothing new about Hemp Seeds, as they have been cultivated for thousands of years! Twelve thousand years ago, the people of Taiwan were using hemp fibers in rope and the Chinese were using them in clothing. And, over in the New World, Washington and Jefferson were growers of hemp and the Declaration of Independence was even written on Hemp paper. Click here to read some more interesting hemp facts!
With such universal uses, Hemp leaves us little room for complaint! However, when it comes to digesting the seed, a question of legality seems to arise. Most people want to know if it's actually legal to eat hemp, as it's definitely illegal to smoke it! The answer lies in the fact that the edible Hemp Seed comes from a different species of the Cannabis plant called the Sativa, which contains lesser amounts of THC, 0.03% to be exact. The variety called the Indica is the variety that produces the highest levels of THC. So, yes, it is 100% legal to eat Hemp Seeds and with the following medical evidence, there's no question that this little seed is here to heal!
Whether in oil, seed, or milk form, Hemp contains:
- More protein than milk, eggs, or milk and is easier to digest than all three.
- Contains all 10 amino acids!
- Contains about 47% oil, 78% of which is omega 3 and 6, the essential fats.
- All the essential or omega fats required for human health.
- Several times more omega 3 essential fat than any fish.
- Provides more energy than energy bars, without the sugar and with much less saturated fat. Excellent to start the day with or for athletes on the run!
We're major fans of the Hemp-based bars made by Rocky Mountain Grain Products called More Than A Square Meal (see above)! The bars contain Hemp Hearts and include a bit of high quality chocolate topped with a yummy topping of cashews, papaya, or even coconut! Email snowrk@telusplanet.net to get your own! We also love Nature's Path Hemp Plus Granola! This granola will give you lots of energy without tons of added sugar. It's definitely the best packaged granola out there. You can even add the delicious tasting Hemp Milk as a dairy substitute! Now, that's what we call unBEETable!
Get hearty! Add some Hemp Hearts to your life! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

My Health Tip: "Let's get this straight. To have a healthy digestive track, you gotta do a few tricks! Take probiotics and enzymes if your tummy isn't happy!"
My Favorite Quote: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous! Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
