This week, The Weekly Beet reports straight from the garden. Mary Kent smells the Roses, revealing the incredible therapeutic benefits these blooming beauties have on the body.

Covered by a thorny, protective skin, supported by a long and slender stem, and blossomed by ever so vibrant, velveteen petals, the Rose is simply one of the most mysterious flowers on Earth. Famed for a window in Notre Dame's cathedral, given to a loved one on the day of Saint Valentine's, and named after the sacred Catholic prayer bead, the Rose has stood throughout history as a symbolic testimony of faith, love, beauty, and even war. With names like Gallica, Noisette, and China, the Rose comes in thousands of different species and translates into many languages as red or pink. The Rose itself has been referred to as the Queen of all Flowers, but it is
its oil that is often known as the Gift of the Heavens. One ounce of essential oil, which is made from 60,000 petals, is extremely rare and deemed precious in many parts of the world. There are two forms of Rose oil called Absolute and Otto. Each has its own unique smell. Otto is of the purest form due to the distillation process and smells a bit different than the Absolute. You will have to take a sniff to find out which choice is better for you!

First cultivated in ancient Persia, Roses have circulated the globe with their elegance, grace, and most secretly their ability to heal. From the petals and its water to the seeds known as hips, all parts of the Rose have incredible powerful healing components to the mind, the body, and the spirit. Whether it is in the diet with the hips, in the medicine cabinet with the oil, or in a single stem vase with water, you can't go wrong with Roses! Here are a few rosy facts that will definitely make you stop and smell the Roses:

  • Surrounding oneself with Roses can heal any broken heart.

  • Smelling Roses and its oil can alleviate anxiety and depression, increasing harmony and balance.

  • Drinking rose petal tea can soothe sore
    throats.

  • Rubbing essential Rose oil on the skin can heal any irritation, fight bacteria, and heal wounds.

  • Rose hips contain more Vitamin C than oranges. You can buy powder form from the health food store.

  • Drinking Rose hip tea is an excellent source of antioxidants.

  • Rose hip oil promotes collagen growth and is an excellent anti-ager.

Roses have long been a major component to perfumes, make-ups, lotions, and potions. Another byproduct of distilling Rose petals is Rosewater. Used in the Middle East and Europe as a flavoring for desserts, Rosewater is also an excellent elixir to the skin. If you've never tried Rosewater as a toner, it's time you did! Click here to learn an
easy way to make your own Rosewater at home. Put in a spray bottle and use to hydrate your skin naturally!

It's time to smell the roses! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

Love,

Mary Kent
