Healthy Happy Birthday!
"In a city dominated by cupcakes overflowing with sugar, flour and butter cream, it's easy for those with delicate tummies to feel left out."
Erin McKenna, founder of Babycakes
This week, The Weekly Beet reports from the kitchen of Babycakes, New York's tastiest and healthiest bakery. Mary Kent celebrates her birthday, blowing out the candles on one seriously delicious vegan cupcake.
Move over Betty Crocker! These days there's something alot healthier cooking up in the kitchen of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Founded by the gorgeous Erin McKenna, Babycakes certainly takes the cake when it comes to healthy desserts! Voted Best Cupcake in 2006 by New York magazine, Babycakes covers the board in healthy sweets, offering a selection of muffins, cupcakes, tea cakes, apple pie, full-sized cakes upon request, cookies, biscuits, corn bread, macaroons, brownies, and gingerbread. The variety is just incredible and, yes, they are ALL absolutely made with your health concerns at the forefront. Erin's story is like that of many who are forced to go the alternative route when it comes to nutrition. When she found out she was allergic to dairy and wheat, Erin was no longer able to enjoy New York favorites like Magnolia Bakery, whose cookies and cakes are filled with white flour, white sugar, and lots of dairy. So, she set out to make a healthy cupcake that she could eat free of all allergens such as dairy, sugar, gluten, wheat, nut and egg, et voila, Babycakes was formed. We're super grateful for Erin's allergies because they lead her to create something wonderful that the rest of us can truly enjoy! Now, that's what we call unBEETable!
Here's why we couldn't eat just one cupcake for Mary Kent's birthday celebration. Babycakes' ingredients are:
- 100% organic
- Gluten free
- Dairy & egg free
- Nut free
- Free of wheat, casein, and even soy
- Made with cold-pressed coconut oil
- Contain NO white flour in the batter. Only flours
of spelt, rice, potato
starch, and garbanzo/fava bean combo
- Made with NO refined white sugar
- Are sweetened with agave and stevia.
- They deliver all over Manhattan AND they Fed Ex. EEK!
Yes, it is possible for something so healthy to taste sooo good! We headed straight to the 50's style bakery, where the staff is dressed in candy-striped uniforms, and tasted the chocolate cupcake, which was literally out of this world. It got our first place prize for sure! Tied for second place was the vanilla cupcake which was made of spelt flour with the vanilla cupcake which was made of garbanzo bean flour. The icing is so naturally sweet that it won't leave you with those sugar cravings like Betty Crocker does! Also, by using cold-pressed coconut oil, it definitely shows that Babycakes cares about your weight, cholesterol level, and immune system! We commend you, Erin, for a healthy job well done. Your cupcakes definitely have The Beet's stamp of approval!
It's time to make your birthday a healthy one. Order from Babycakes! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
