This week, The Heart Beet reports straight from the cabbage patch! Mary Kent serves up a Cabbage Cocktail, revealing why we all should juice up this leafy veg!
Known as the drug of the poor in the Middle Ages, cabbage has long been known for it's medicinal qualities. The ancient Egyptians drank the juicy stuff the day before a heavy night of drinking, so as to prevent a hangover the next day and Captain Cook swore by the stuff to heal skin infections. Highly esteemed as the national food in Russia and long held in legend that babies come from the cabbage patch, this leafy green is proving to be much more magical than just a healing remedy. Coming in colors of white, pea green, and electric pink and purple, cabbage was the earliest cultivated vegetable in the Brassica family and is closely related to cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. Dr. Garnett Cheney of Stanford University's School of Medicine, has long studied the effects of cabbage on the human body, but most notably on gastrointestinal ulceration. In 1952, he studied 100 peptic ulcer patients by giving them four glasses of fresh, raw cabbage juice daily. A Cheney Cabbage Cocktail! He reported that within one week, 81% of his patients were free of all pain, and over two-thirds were better within four days. What is fascinating is that he found he could not achieve the same healing results when the cabbage juice was heated or not fresh. S-methyl-methionine, or what is now called Vitamin U by Dr. Cheney, is the mysterious amino acid found in high levels in cabbage that's to thank for such healing power.
So, here are my instructions to a fabulously, healthy tonic to heal alot more than just your tummy! I added a couple more goods than Dr. Cheney because it definitely makes the cocktail taste zippier! First, grab a juicer at Wal-Mart. Sure, you can get a fancy one, but the Juiceman Junior works just fine. I love mine so much! Then, you will need the following:

- A half head of Purple Cabbbage
- 2 Granny Smith Apples
- 6 stalks of Celery
Wash everything with hot water. I do that to kill the bacteria. If you want to get super bacteria chic, you can make a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and water and place in a spray bottle. Then, spray and wash accordingly. I always leave out the seeds of my apples. Just something I learned at the juice bar in New York City. So, cut the apple in fours, leaving the core behind. Then, cut the head of cabbage in half and store the other for later. One by one, put in the juicer. The color will be brilliantly fuchsia and the taste will be tarty and delightful! It's really one of the most healing tonics you can juice. Enjoy!
Cabbage seems to be more than just a miraculous stomach cure! It naturally heals both the inside and out. Here's why we should all include a Cabbage Cocktail in our lives:

- Reduces the risk of developing colon cancer.
- Detoxifies the stomach and upper bowels, improving digestion.
- Contains chemicals believed to speed up the body's metabolism of estrogen, reducing the incidence of breast, uterus, and ovaries cancer.
- Excellent source of vitamin C and beta-carotene.
- Anti-inflammatory affects.
- Promotes healing of ulcers.
- Reduces risk of heart disease and stroke.
- Alleviates rheumatisms and skin problems.
- Protects against Alzheimers.
It's time to make a healthy cocktail. Head to the cabbage patch! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
